In addition, to the work their pastor demanded, DeLeon and his sibling also did farm work raising animals and harvesting produce for their own house. Since they where farmers, DeLeon and his siblings grew up eating organic foods like eggs, milk, beef, and fruits.

One of DeLeon’s fondest memories is when his mother made mystery stew. After serving her children, they where dying to know what it was and she said “cow’s tongue.” When they realized what they had eaten, some didn’t retain the contents of the meal they’d consumed.

However, if DeLeon and his sibling weren’t being feed mystery stew by their mother, they often prepared their own meals. If there wasn’t much to eat, they’d make a meal called “dandy funk.” This exquisite entree consisted of crumbled toast added with a bowl of sugary milk. This was like their version of homemade cereal.
